Archival Photo Wilhelm Beck
The summer of 2000, when I was looking for houses here in Alberta, one town's name seemed oddly familiar: Standard. The name rattled around in my mind for a while before it's significance finally came back to me.---I had often heard Mrs. Beck talk about Depression times when Pastor Beck had served in Standard.
As it turned out, the village where I bought a house is only about 25 kilometres from Standard. So, when my dad was visiting over Christmas, we duly attended a service in the Becks' former church.
The church was built in 1919, with altar and pulpit in the old Danish style. In 1978 a ship was hung over the aisle, just as impressive as St. Ansgar's ship. That it was placed there as recently as 1978 shows that the congregation of Nazareth Lutheran is still very much a Danish one. In fact, part of the medley that the organist played for her prelude was "Det Kimer Nu Til Julefest"!
After the service Pastor Everett kindly allowed me to take some pictures. He even found an elderly couple who remembered the Becks, and introduced them to us. We chatted for a while, found Pastor Beck's picture among the photos of past clergy, and left Standard feeling we had touched our own past. We were given warm invitations to return.
