Eli Ross-Jensen was born in Aarhus, June 27, 1921, and spent her younger years in Randers. When she was a teenager the family moved to Aalborg, where she finished her education and started as a painter apprentice. She was deeply involved with the girl guides, became a patrol leader and ended up as a troop captain. It was through the scout movement that she met her husband to be, and they were married August 2, 1947.
The couple moved to Silkeborg and opened up a wholesome business in hand painted wooden wares. Thanks to two of Eli's uncles in Canada some of the goods were exported to Canada, and the interest in Canada grew with the result that the couple emigrated to Canada in March of 1949, where they settled in Dorval, Quebec.
Eli bore two children, John born in 1950 and Hanne in 1952. She became very soon involved in the work of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, and she served for many years as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent. Later she got involved in the ELW Evangelical Lutheran Women both locally and at the synod level. Her proudest achievement was when she organized the National Convention of the ELW here in Montreal with 500 women in attendance. Her love for St. Ansgar's and its members never wavered, she was always willing to serve and provide leadership.
She was also a great-grandmother to her 4 grandchildren, and she spared no effort, when it came to her greater family. She kept in touch with family and friends through her well-known letter writing. In 1997, she celebrated her golden anniversary with family and friends.
Recently, she was honoured for her involvement with the World Day of Prayer.
Unfortunately, earlier that year it was discovered that she had cancer and she underwent an operation in March, and recovered very well. In January of 1999 it was discovered that the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes, and after that it was a struggle with chemo therapy and all it involves. Her own therapy was caring for her garden. She carried on bravely to the very end and has now found peace.
Our hearts are forever touched by her journey through our lives.
